anatomy of a capsule album:

  1. start with an intro, usually about a minute to a minute-thirty long
  2. lead into its self-titled banger of a single that exemplifies the theme of this album
  3. keep the beats flowing from there
  4. melody optional, simple as can be optional

i can’t say it gives iidx energy because the stylistic shifts aren’t usually too drastic from one album to the next – or at least, he’s been in his electro phase for a while now, with the shibuya-kei pizzicato pop slowly vanishing into the rear-view horizon.

★★ more! more! more! and wow does this album’s banger of a s/t deliver.
★★ the time is now: is it fair to say that capsule-kun found his genre? i feel like electropop plays well to his strengths1 while masking his weaknesses2 – there’s a reason why Perfume popped off, after all.
★★ jumper!
★ pleasure ground. i want to love the 6415 hook but it really feels like a consolation prize
★ the mutations of life
★★ e.d.i.t
★ adventure, though i think the high arp and saw lead don’t mesh with the chorus melody…

Footnotes

  1. clean, tasty production, strong beats, strong grooves

  2. functional but static melodies, tendency to write grooves more than songs, not a lot of within-album variance, if the bpm goes above 150 the bus explodes
